Notre Faust, saison 2
Written and directed by
Imagine the suspense of a TV series you cannot stop watching, every new episode creating an event you wait for with bated breath… The plot lines weave together love interest, detective stories, political intrigues, financial dealings and family affairs. At the sides of the stage several authors are writing stories in real time, and actors work with the urgency of shooting a film. Notre Faust, saison 2, kicks off afresh, after five breathtaking episodes premiered at the Théâtre Ouvert in 2015. The protagonists return to the stage, to pose questions that are at once protean and immaterial in today’s society: what is evil, temptation or a deal with the devil? With a team of five contemporary playwrights, Robert Cantarella orchestrates this encounter between the stylistic codes of a TV series and a great theatrical myth, in a political gesture affirming the possibility of collective writing. The result is exhilarating, with a certain abruptness and an unfeigned delight in playing with and embracing the variations in rhythm and temporality. Notre Faust, saison 2 exalts in collage-composition, in shocking associations and improbable consequences, in the instability of language and in the friction of rehearsals. A porous and deeply moving work emerges, that diabolically refuses to choose between its intimately baroque tendencies and its resolutely contemporary form.
