Les Parlers debout
A cycle of performance pieces created by
Bettina Atala is a long-time member of the performance group Grand Magasin, and shares their taste for narrative deconstruction. In the first show in this cycle (Stand-up Comédie 1 & 2), Atala explores the American stand-up comedy genre. By distorting its stylistic codes, she reviews her daily life and her memories, or exposes the mechanics of producing a show. Later in the season Atala creates and stars in a TV sitcom (SITuation COMédie) which simultaneously takes place in the middle of her theatrical show (thereby updating the TV series’ plot). In Group Portrait, Betina Atala creates a choreography in collaboration with Sheila Atala, in which the movements of the performers (local volunteers) are determined by their personal histories. For the next performance, she designs a video game in which the hero, a contemporary artist in search of success, has to overcome the barriers separating him from his audience. The video game, accessible in the theatre foyer, will first be presented at a launch party (Poèmes et Video Game). Finally it is quite natural that the stand-up genre goes into motion, leading the audience in a promenade throughout the theater (Paysage emprunté). Les Parlers debout are punctuated by paradoxical situations and unexpected twists and turns; and in so doing they recite an unusual poem about the human condition. The six performance pieces Bettina Atala has devised for Nanterre-Amandiers examine the act of creation, and their common denominator is “standing up”.
